> Apostille guide for Alberta, Canada: the competent authority is Ministry of Justice of Alberta. Verified 2026-08-09.

Everything below is transcribed from this office's own published sources and printed in its words. A value we could not confirm against an official page is marked "(unverified)" — but the absence of that marker is not a guarantee that a fact was checked, and the source's own doubts stay inside the notes reproduced here verbatim. Confirm fees, addresses and deadlines with the office before you send documents or money.

- **Jurisdiction:** Alberta, Canada
- **Verified as of:** August 9, 2026

## Who issues the apostille

Ministry of Justice of Alberta

HCCH listing — operationally the Official Documents and Appointments office (Deputy Provincial Secretary's Office), Edmonton. Covers Alberta-issued public documents: vital statistics originals (birth/marriage/death certificates on polymer paper), certificates of divorce with court seal, certified education records, and documents notarized by an Alberta notary public. RCMP criminal record checks referred to Global Affairs Canada. (GAC's site: Alberta handles documents "issued or notarized" in Alberta.)

## Which documents this office will accept

- **From the source:** Non-vital-statistics documents must be notarized by an Alberta notary public first; vital statistics must be original polymer certificates (not laminated, not wallet-size); divorce certificates need original court seal

## Certifications you may need first

No additional certification step is required before the apostille.

## The request form

A PDF request form. Download: https://www.alberta.ca/system/files/jus-apostille-request-form.pdf Apostille Request Form (PDF)

## Requesting online

Online is for PAYMENT only: you prepay there, then the documents themselves are mailed or brought in. Portal: https://eservices.alberta.ca/certificates-of-apostille.html Payment online only; documents still sent by mail/courier

## What it costs

- **$25.00 CAD** per document — "An apostille costs $25 per document" / eServices: "There is a $25.00 fee for each document that needs a certificate." Note: HCCH page still shows $10 — outdated

## How to pay

- **Online:** prepayment through the online portal
- Online only via Alberta eServices (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Visa Debit, Apple Pay); requires Alberta.ca Account; cash not accepted. Print receipt and enclose with documents

## Where to send your documents

- **Mailing address:** Official Documents and Appointments, #111, 9833 109 Street, Edmonton, Alberta T5K 2E8
- **From the source:** Mail or courier

## How long it takes

- **By mail:** "Allow at least 7 to 10 business days for processing" (plus mail time)
- Return by Canada Post unless prepaid envelope/waybill enclosed

## Checking status and verifying an apostille

- **Verification register:** https://apostille-gac.powerappsportals.com/en/eregister-eregistre/ — Alberta apostilles verifiable via the shared GAC tool

## Remote online notarization

- A grey area: no statute authorizes remote notarization, and none prohibits it.
- **How the signer is identified:** None prescribed for remote execution; Law Society client ID/verification rules (government photo ID; virtual verification via authentication technology, credit-file or dual-process method) apply to lawyers. No KBA
- No maximum fee is recorded here for a remote act. A missing cap is not the same as "no cap" — the reason is in the notes below.
- **From the source:** Grey area — no general statute/regulation expressly authorizes OR prohibits remote commissioning/notarization. The Notaries and Commissioners Act (SA 2013, c. N-5.5) and alberta.ca guidance are silent on video. Law Society of Alberta (permanent guidance): "The Law Society of Alberta does not set rules governing remotely executed or attested documents" — each notary/commissioner must confirm the receiving authority accepts remote execution, and "notaries and commissioners must not execute any document in a manner that would mislead someone as to how or where the document was executed. Notaries and commissioners should clearly indicate that a document was executed virtually or remotely where applicable." Court of King's Bench 2020 COVID notice permitted remote commissioning of affidavits for court use (current status of that notice: unverified). Permanent statutory remote witnessing exists for wills/enduring POA/personal directives via 2020 COVID-19-era amendments requiring lawyer involvement (Wills and Succession Act etc.) (unverified detail). Who can do it: notaries public (lawyers/students-at-law ex officio; appointed lay notaries) and commissioners for oaths — subject to acceptor's requirements. Fee rules: no statutory fee/cap — official FAQ: "there is no set fee for these services."

## Other things the source says

In-person offices: none open to the public — "The front counter is closed. We do not accept documents for authentication in person." No walk-in/rush/while-you-wait. Office location: #111, 9833 109 Street, Edmonton
